If central Burgundy, with Dijon and Beaune, is very popular with tourists, southern Burgundy is too often overlooked. Quiet roads, fabulous food, and great accommodation will be your rewards for being adventurous!
The Beaujolais region is easy to access (Macon has a TGV station and is on the A6 and A40 motorways). The region offers a wide variety of terrains for cycling and a great network of roads… an ideal setup.
And cycling is the best way to experience the area! Our itinerary will take you on roads that are ideal for cycling rather than driving! Stop wherever you wish and enjoy a glass of wine in some of the world-renown villages you will ride through.
Although this tour is an athletic tour and is better suited to more serious riders, it can be done by all by using an e-bike. This makes it a great trip to share with friends or family. To make it a more personalized trip, we can make some changes to the itinerary and other arrangements, simply let us know your requirements. If you wish to do a shorter cycling tour in Beaujolais, make sure to check out our Short Escape in Beaujolais.

Attn: Groups of 4 or more can start any day.
Daily cycling distance ranges from 29 to 67 km.

Upon check-in at your hotel, located only a short walk from the central train station in Macon, you will receive all the necessary materials for your trip (GPS, marked maps, and roadbook). We’ll meet you in person or call you to go over the materials. If you rent bikes from us, we’ll meet you to outfit you you’re your bikes. Today’s ride will take you through famous vineyards such as Saint-Verand and Pouilly-Fuissé. Another highlight is the Solutré rock formation
Julienas, Saint-Amour, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent are not only wine labels… you will ride through these famous villages and vineyards. Wine can be sampled in a few places along the way, including at Georges Duboeuf’s Museum of Wine in Romanèche-Thorins! Some serious climbing will be involved to reach the “Terrasse d’Avenas” which offers superb panoramic views of the entire Beaujolais region. A nice descent sees you arrive into Beaujeu before reaching Villié-Morgon, where you will stay for 2 nights.
Green will be the color of the day! You will ride through the “Beaujolais Vert” (Green Beaujolais) using a section of the greenway! This warm-up section will lead you to a 10-km climb before riding down through villages and towns (including Beaujeu) ideally located for a coffee-break, a snack, or a relaxed lunch.
One of the highlights of the ride is the climb to Mont-Brouilly (484 m / 1,450 ft.), probably the best viewpoint of the whole area. The mountain itself is picturesque, its slopes covered with Côte-de-Brouilly vines and its summit crowned by a 19th-century chapel. From here, more climbing awaits, with a first section through a landscape of vineyards, before a final stretch through lush woods and wilder scenery
The itinerary will take you through “Les Pierres Dorées” and its magnificent villages built from these “golden stones”, before riding back through some vineyards in the southernmost part of Burgundy. With three different lengths of ride to choose from, you can go as long as you want, as hard as you want! It’s the perfect end to your Beaujolais cycling adventure.
After breakfast, take your time and prepare for the next part of your adventure and your transfer to Lyon.
For groups of 4 or more: this tour is highly customizable. We can add extra days/rides and activities… just let us know more about your dream Beaujolais cycling tour and we’ll tell you what can be done.
