Imagine escaping the stresses of daily life and tight schedules for a few days… that’s our promise with this short escape in Beaujolais.
Not only the area is easy to get to by train or car, but the cycling is amazing, not to mention the food, and, of course, the wine – perfect for a long weekend!
This region is ideal for riders who wish to do some serious, yet relaxed cycling. You will ride through towns and villages, each with their own beauty and charm. With an average distance of 70 km (approx. 45 miles) per day, it is a relatively athletic tour, designed for riders in good shape, an ideal training ground before proceeding on to the nearby Alps!
Not to worry if you find the mileage and the climbing too intimidating, we have e-bikes! Hence, this trip can be done by groups of riders of varying levels of fitness… families or groups of friends traveling together. As it is a highly customizable tour, we can adapt it based on your interests and desired daily mileage… just let us know more about your dream cycling trip.
Your hotel in Macon is located a short walk from the train station (check the SNCF website for the train timetable). If you travel with your own bikes, you will find all the necessary materials upon check-in at your hotel. We will go over the itinerary with you in person or via phone (or any other technology app). If you choose to rent bikes from us, we’ll time the delivery so that we can meet in person and go over the itinerary. Your warm-up ride follows a route through well-known vineyards such as Saint-Vérand and Pouilly-Fuissé, along with the hard-to-miss Solutré rock formation.
The route qualifies as “hors-catégorie” (beyond category), if not for its climbs, then for some of the world class villages you will ride through: Julienas, Saint-Amour, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent are some of the best wines in Beaujolais. Feel free to take short breaks to sample some of these wines… with moderation as the ride picks up from here with some rewarding climbs in the “Terrasse d’Avenas”, a beautiful area that offers superb panoramic views of the entire Beaujolais region. A nice descent sees you ride into Beaujeu on your way to Villié-Morgon where you will overnight.
Today’s ride includes a climb up Mont-Brouilly (484 m / 1,450 ft.), offering one of the best viewpoints of the entire region. The mountain itself is picturesque, its slopes covered with Côte-de-Brouilly vines and its summit crowned with a 19th-century chapel that is still a pilgrimage site. From here, the route begins to climb in earnest, leading you along hillside routes through lush woods before a final descent into the charming village of Vaux-en-Beaujolais.
The last day’s ride of this short escape in Beaujolais will take you through “Les Pierres Dorées” and its magnificent villages built from these “golden stones”, before riding back through some vineyards in the southernmost part of Burgundy. With three different length rides to choose from, you can go as long as you want, as hard as you want. It’s the perfect end to your cycling in Beaujolais adventure!
Your transfer to Lyon is included after your last ride!
This tour is highly customizable for any groups of 4 or more. Just tell us more about your dream cycling trip in Beaujolais (extra nights, extra rides, transfers, etc…) and we’ll let you know what can be done.
